Building Healthy Habits That Last

Building Healthy Habits That Last

Life’s a journey, and sometimes the road takes unexpected turns. Maybe your career has shifted gears, your nest has emptied, or perhaps you simply crave a renewed sense of purpose. No matter the reason, it’s never too late to rewrite your story and create a healthier, happier you. But as we get older, building new habits can feel challenging. Don’t worry, though!

The key to a successful “restart” lies in habits. These small, consistent actions woven into your daily routine can create a powerful ripple effect of positive change. Here are some tips to get you started, keeping your amazing, evolving self in mind:

Listen to your body’s wisdom

Don’t try to become a gym rat overnight. Begin with a single, achievable goal, like a daily walk or a morning stretch routine. As your body adjusts, you can gradually increase intensity and duration. This is something I learned the hard way. After recovering from an injury and taking a break from exercise, I went back to my old routine of hitting the gym hard and fast. My body just wasn’t having it!  It lacked the same bounce-back it had in my younger days.  I realized I had to be smarter this time around.

  • Building Back Better: Here’s what worked for me: I started incorporating a simple morning walking routine.  I began with just 15 minutes, then gradually increased it to 30.  Before I knew it, I was walking for an hour most mornings before showering and getting ready for work.
  • Finding Your Fitness Groove:  If walking outdoors feels like too much, there are plenty of great indoor options! I like to alternate between walking on the treadmill and following YouTube workouts from instructors like GrowwithJo or Get Fit With Rick. The key is to find activities you enjoy – that way, making them a habit becomes much easier.

Find your “Why”

Having a clear purpose fuels motivation.  Maybe you want more energy to explore new hobbies, improved sleep for sharper focus, or a stronger body for travel adventures.  Connecting your goal to a vision of your vibrant future keeps you inspired. Imagine yourself confidently navigating cobblestone streets in Rome or effortlessly keeping up with your children – that’s the power of prioritizing your health!

Celebrate every milestone

Acknowledging your progress – no matter how small – is crucial. Did you walk an extra block today? Great! Did you manage a full week of morning stretches? Fantastic!  These victories reinforce your new habits and keep you moving forward.

Habit stacking

Pair a new habit with an existing one. For example, want to start meditating?

  • Here’s a personal trick I’ve found works wonders: After I exercise and shower, I simply sit for 5 to 10 minutes between getting ready for work. Using my Insight Timer app, I search for a short meditation track that suits my mood. Lately, I’ve been loving the “morning meditations” playlist, where options range from 7 to 17 minutes. (I usually aim for 10 minutes) After that mini mental recharge, I continue getting dressed for work. Just like that, habit stacking in action!

Embrace the bounce back

Setbacks are a natural part of life. Don’t let them derail you. Forgive yourself, learn from the experience, and get back on track. A resilient spirit is key to lasting change. Remember, even the most graceful ballerina trips sometimes, but they always get back up and keep dancing.

Remember, this is your journey, not a race. It’s about progress, not perfection. Embrace the adventure of building a healthier, happier you, one healthy habit at a time. As you age, these habits become the building blocks for a fulfilling and active life – a life that keeps getting better with each chapter.
